Lost a Pet?

Lost a Pet?

Losing a beloved pet can be heartbreaking — but we can help.

TLHS partners with Petco Love Lost and local Animal Control agencies to make sure every found animal has the best chance to be reunited with its family.

Below are a few ways you can search for and help bring your lost pet home.

Start by checking our Current Stray Holds page to see if your pet may already be at our shelter, and then use Petco Love Lost to search nationwide.

Together, we can help get your best friend home safe and sound.

Check Our Found Animals – Current Stray Holds

Sometimes pets are picked up by caring citizens or Animal Control officers who believe they are strays. These animals are brought to TLHS and placed on a five-day stray hold while we try to locate their families.

To see if your pet may already be with us, visit our Found Animals – Current Stray Holds at TLHS page.

If you recognize your pet:

  • Call (662) 205-4221 ext. 1000 during business hours or email intake@tupeloleehumane.org.

  • Bring proof of ownership (photos, vet records, microchip).

  • Reclaim fees may apply as outlined in our Intake Policy.

Even if your pet isn’t listed yet, please check back daily — new animals arrive every day.

At Tupelo-Lee Humane Society, we know how stressful it can be when a pet goes missing. That’s why every animal that comes into our care is automatically listed on Petco Love Lost, a free, nationwide tool that helps reunite pets with their families.

With Petco Love Lost, you can:

  • Browse pets currently in our care to see if your furry friend has been found

  • Report a lost or found pet to alert the community quickly

  • Register your own pet so they’re easier to locate if they ever go missing

  • Create and print lost or found pet flyers to share online and around town

Tip: A clear, high-quality photo of your pet makes it much easier for others to help you find them!

We also encourage local community support—share your pet’s lost or found post with neighbors, social media groups, and local businesses. The more people who see your pet’s information, the higher the chances of a safe reunion!

Frequently Asked Questions About Lost Pets and Reclaiming

TLHS contracts with Lee County, Mississippi, which means we receive animals from all municipalities, cities, and towns within Lee County through their Animal Control agencies.

If you believe your pet has been impounded or picked up as a stray, contact TLHS as soon as possible.

You’ll need to provide proof of ownership such as photos, vet records, or a microchip.

TLHS charges reclaim fees to cover the care provided during your pet’s stay.

We recommend calling ahead so staff can confirm your pet’s location and assist you with the reclaim process.

If you recognize your pet on our Current Stray Holds page, contact us right away by calling (662) 205-4221 ext. 1000 during business hours or emailing  intake@tupeloleehumane.org.

Our staff will verify ownership and guide you through the reclaim process. Please send proof of ownership by email such as:

  • Recent photos

  • Veterinary or adoption records

  • Microchip registration or license

Once verified, reclaim fees may apply to cover basic care provided during the hold period.

TLHS charges reclaim fees for pets being reclaimed by their owners. These fees help cover the cost of basic care provided while the animal is at our facility, such as food, housing, and vaccinations.

Reclaim fees vary depending on the length of stay and any required veterinary services (such as vaccinations, parasite prevention given during intake, or any other required medical care).

Our staff will review any fees with you during the reclaim process, and payment is due at the time your pet is picked up.

Please call (662) 205-4221 ext. 1000 during regular business hours or email intake@tupeloleehumane.org if you’d like to check your pet’s reclaim total in advance.

Acceptable forms of proof include:

  • Photos of the pet (especially showing unique markings)

  • Veterinary or adoption records

  • Microchip documentation

  • City or county pet license

  • Other identifying information (such as distinguishing physical traits)

Bringing as much documentation as possible helps speed up the reclaim process.

If the animal is brought into TLHS, it will be held for the full five-day stray-hold period to allow the owner time to reclaim them.

Once reclaimed, we highly encourage owners to register their pet’s microchip in their name and keep that information up to date. This includes updating your contact information any time your phone number or address changes.

All animals leaving TLHS—whether reclaimed or adopted—are microchipped while in our care, ensuring every pet has a permanent form of identification to help prevent future separation.

  • Keep collars and tags on your pets at all times.

  • Ensure fences, gates, and doors are secure.

  • Verify your microchip contact information is current.

  • Spay/neuter your pets to reduce roaming behaviors.

  • Make sure your pet’s ID tags are legible and up to date.

If your pet doesn’t appear on our Current Stray Holds page, don’t lose hope. New animals arrive at TLHS every day, and photos can take up to 24–48 hours to be uploaded after intake. It’s also possible your pet hasn’t yet been brought to our facility.

We recommend:

Please note that all animals leaving TLHS—whether reclaimed or adopted—receive a microchip implant prior to release to help ensure they can be identified and reunited more easily in the future.

All stray animals brought to TLHS are held for five (5) full days to allow their owners time to reclaim them.
After the stray-hold period, animals become eligible for adoption once they have completed the necessary medical and behavioral steps in our care.

The exact timing may vary depending on:

  • Whether the pet has been spayed or neutered

  • Time needed to complete spay/neuter surgery (based on shelter veterinary scheduling and intake volume)

  • Heartworm testing and treatment, if applicable

  • Overall health, behavior, or recovery needs

Our goal is always to prepare each animal for adoption as safely and efficiently as possible while ensuring they receive the proper care before placement.
