At the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society, we believe in transparency and gratitude toward the partners who make our lifesaving work possible. The grants awarded to TLHS over the past year have helped us expand medical care, enhance shelter programs, and strengthen our community outreach. Each grant plays a vital role in helping every paw find safety, healing, and a forever home — and we’re proud to share the measurable impacts of that support below.
2024 Safe Havens For Pets Grant Award
In early 2024, the Tupelo Lee Humane Society (TLHS) was selected as one of only two recipients nationwide to receive a Safe Havens for Pets Grant from the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI). This pilot grant program was established to assist domestic violence survivors and their pets in underserved regions identified as “safe haven deserts.”
Through this funding, TLHS partnered with SAFE, Inc. and Safe Haven for Pets to create a coordinated network of support for individuals fleeing domestic violence situations with companion animals. The program provides temporary shelter, veterinary care, safe pet transport, foster coordination, and cross-training for staff between participating organizations.
This initiative directly addresses a critical gap in services — helping survivors who might otherwise delay leaving dangerous environments for fear of abandoning or endangering their pets. Together with SAFE, Inc., TLHS now plays an essential role in ensuring that both people and their animals can seek safety, healing, and stability.

The Safe Havens for Pets program reflects TLHS’s broader mission of compassion and protection — not only for animals, but also for the families and communities that love them. This grant enables TLHS to expand its reach and provide meaningful, trauma-informed care in moments of crisis.
